Youth Preparatory Chorus Assessment Information
Rehearsals:
Mondays 4:45 - 5:45PM at Trinity - St. Paul's Centre
Singers ages 3-6 are invited to:
-
sing a song of their choice. Some children prefer to record a song to send in advance. This is an informal assessment, and is an excellent opportunity for the parents, child and Artistic Director to meet.
Youth Junior Chorus Assessment Information
Rehearsals: Mondays
5:00 - 6:00PM at Trinity - St. Paul's Centre
Singers ages 7-10 are invited to:
-
demonstrate the ability to sing in tune: prepare one unaccompanied song which they know well (Avoid a pop song due to narrow range and need for ornamentation). Suggestion: “O Canada” or a folk song (Songs in all languages are welcome.)

demonstrate and share musical skill: play a piece on an instrument if they are presently taking lessons

demonstrate beginning note reading: clap basic rhythms in common time (eighth notes and rests, quarter notes and rests, half notes and rests, whole notes and rests)

demonstrate the ability to hold a part: sing “Row Your Boat” or another canon of choice with the Artistic Director

Youth Main Chorus Audition Information

Singers ages 9-16 are invited to:

demonstrate the ability to sing in tune: prepare one unaccompanied song which they know and enjoy (not a pop song) in a language of their choice. Singers should ensure that the song demonstrates their comfortable vocal range.

Note to Parents: The singer must bring a copy of music to the audition.

demonstrate the ability to sing in harmony/hold a part: sing “Row Your Boat” in a round with the Artistic Director or a different canon of their own choosing

demonstrate instrumental music skill: perform one piece on an instrument, if they are presently taking lessons

demonstrate expressive/dramatic ability: the singer will be asked to read a short poem expressively, at sight
-
demonstrate ability to understand and read rhythms: the singer will be asked to perform one of the rhythms sent in advance of the audition. Write in the counts of your chosen rhythm in advance, and perform it by clapping at a steady tempo

demonstrate ability to read music on the staff: prepare with solfege (moveable d, r, m) and sing at sight a diatonic melody in C+, F+ or G+

Chamber Youth Leadership Singers Audition Information

Singers in grades 8-12 are invited to complete the same six assessment components for Main Chorus. Singers in Gr. 8 - 12 have demonstrated excellent commitment in Main Chorus, and willingness to apply a disciplined approach. Singers new to VIVA should submit a reference letter from a teacher (not necessarily a music teacher) indicating the singer’s commitment and perseverance in other contexts.

Every Voice Matters Chorus Assessment Information
Rehearsals:
Mondays
7:30 to 8:45 PM at Trinity - St. Paul's Centre
The singer does not need a formal musical background. They are welcome to play a short piece on a musical instrument if they wish.
Teens and Adults who currently or previously have an IEP and require individualized support are invited to

demonstrate the ability to sing in tune: sing a song you enjoy and know well

demonstrate their comfortable vocal range: sing some vocal exercises with the Artistic Director
Modifications in assessment requirements will be made for singers who have diagnosed disabilities or Individual Education Plans. Please indicate these needs at the time of booking. Parents and caregivers should be available to discuss their singer’s strengths and needs with the Artistic Director and Inclusion Coordinator at the time of assessment, in order that the appropriate individualized support can be provided.
Singers wishing to join EVM should be able to work collaboratively, and demonstrate collegial and respectful behaviour toward others.

Adult Chamber Singers Audition Information

2:00 to 3:30 PM at Trinity - St. Paul's Centre
Singers are invited to

prepare an unaccompanied solo song that shows the quality of their voice
-
perform a challenging sight-singing passage as they demonstrate the ability to hold a harmony part and read at sight, with reasonable accuracy

read a poem aloud, at sight, to demonstrate expression
-
perform some vocal exercises to explore range and tessitura

7:30 to 8:45 PM at Trinity - St. Paul's Centre
There is no audition for the Community Choir. Prospective members are encouraged to attend a rehearsal in advance of joining to explore the nature and calibre of repertoire, as well as the choir’s important partnership with the EVM Chorus. Membership consists of VIVA parents, friends, staff of TSP Centre, and Annex neighbours.
